The Millennium Nucleus of Ion Channel-Associated Diseases (MiNICAD) constitutes an original multistrategic initiative addressed to develop and design novel and innovative therapeutic tools for ion channel-related diseases. Our research philosophy relies on the premise that ion channels proteins constitute non-canonical, but essential signaling molecules part of the complexity of the cellular and systemic physiology. Thus, our main philosophy is to study those mechanisms not only in a biophysical stand-of- view, but in a cellular and physiological context.

The Millennium Science Initiative is a program of the National Agency of Research and Development (ANID; www.anid.cl) at the Chilean Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation.

The Millennium Science Initiative funds the creation and development of research centers of excellence, in the areas of social sciences and natural and exact sciences, which are awarded through public competitions, considering their scientific merits. These centers are divided into Millennium Institutes and Millennium Nuclei, which differ mainly, by the number of researchers, financing periods and financing amount.
